Back in the early years of DCC, our club bought a system called PMP-112 (a CTC-16 knock-off) that was a real dog. The decoders were junk, but there was a guy in Denver, Mark Paris (dba TinyTronics) who built decoders that would at least make the locos move. His decoders had a tiny pot that adjusted the throttle zero-point, and in Athearn locos was accessible by simply popping off the DB housing! Saved a lot of trouble not having to remove the shell, which is always a PITA. It used to be the dynamic brake housing on Athearn models were a snap in affair. I'm alittle out of touch so I don't know if they still are. But my thought there is it would be as simple as taking an athearn GP40-2 dynamic brake blister and popping it on a athearn GP38-2 shell and boom you've got a GP39-2.
