The K4s (2700-27430 were built in 1913-1916 as mixed use locomotives with 69" drivers and a fabricated trailing truck. The K4a design (2744-2753) came in 1923 with 69" drivers for fast freight service, and had the cast Delta trailing truck. All 10 of the K4a class were rebuilt in 1929 to K4b, with 75" drivers, for passenger work, serving to augment the K5s on local and long distance passenger trains. The K4s were mainstays of New York Division commuter and local freight services; none were ever rebuilt.
