Re: (erielack) Griffith, IN...?

To flesh out Henry's info a bit:
EL and C&O of Indiana had joint trackage between State Line and Giffith,
where the latter's track diverged to the north. The lines crossed 40 miles
to the east at N Judson, with C&O veering southeast toward Cincinnati. N
Judson was a similar hotspot crossing of four lines, the other two being the
PRR Panhandle route and NYC's Kankakee Belt. In the late 60's, the KB saw
increased use by NYC and then PC as a Chicago bypass to reach the ATSF at
Streator and the Rock Island at Depue, IL, while the Panhandle saw
significant traffic loss during the PC years. Under the proposed merger of
the J into CNNA, Griffith would become an important connection between the
former GTW and the J, which CNNA wants to use as a connector for its Chicago
routes.

Hi,

Looking at this slide of Griffith, IN...

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=370056640101

was this a junction of 3 different railroad double track main's? What a
great spot to railfan! Is this still a good spot, or are most of these
tracks gone today?

Thanks,
Norm

There's still a double track crossing there, but the Erie is gone as is the
C&O and NYC/MC. The GTW/CN and the EJ&E are still there. There's still
traffic
there, but not like it once was. There are stubs off the EJ&E that are a
little less than a mile long each of the Erie to the northwest and the C&O
to
the southeast, left to service commercial customers.

I have attached an annotated Google Earth image.

Henry
