For example, the aforementioned 21300-class, as built, was stencilled "Return to EL agent, Retsof, NY". Retsof is on the Genesee & Wyoming, an EL connection, and their bread-and-butter was the salt business. So should we assume these cars were purchased for salt shipment? BUT... I have a photo of one of this class (21333, to be precise) that is stenciled "POISON - LEAD OXIDE ONLY". So there's a different service. A good chunk of EL's covered hopper fleet (notably the red cylindrical 20000-series and the 18000-series ex-DL&W 4-bay ACF cars) was dedicated to soda ash service out of Solvay, NY. The P-S 4740 cu. ft. and ACF 3-bay CenterFlow cars were primarily for grain service. - Paul The Erie Lackawanna Mailing List http://EL-List.railfan.net/ To Unsubscribe: http://Lists.Railfan.net/erielackunsub.html ------------------------------
