Re: (erielack) Early E-L Trailer Flats

Mike,

No and no. The GTTX (G-85 and later G-89 cars) was one of the few 2nd
generation long flat designs that did not receive autoracks (the ACF F89J
design is the only other I can think of). As with auto trailers, the high
center sill would have posed clearance problems, and I suspect attaching the
rack pedestals to those thin sideframes would have posed difficulties. In
the early 80's, TT's cars were converted to VTTX container flats by removing
most of the deck and installing container pedestal brackets. The end result
looked remarkably similar to the Mark III Flexivan flat.

The G-85 cars have never been modeled that I'm aware of, although it's
possible they could have been done in brass by Overland. It would certainly
make a distinctive model, and I know Paul would like to see them in HO.

NIFX 6000-6009 were the ten cars leased by EL from North American Car.
Were cars with the GTTX prefix, the ones that were later converted to
auto racks?

Are there models of the G-85 cars available?

This is good information. Thanks Paul B. and Paul T. (for posting the
photos).
