E8 vs PA [was (erielack) May calendar photo]

I know that Erie tried single PAs on the Northern, but I don't know how long that lasted. Turning them at Nyack or Sparkill must have been a task. Pictures abound of single PAs on mainline trains going as far as at least Binghamton, and twin PAs appeared on fan trips -- where their presence indicated a certain surplus of units.

I have always regarded E units as elegant (like overgrown Cadillacs) but sensitive, while PAs were rugged (like steam locomotives) and able to absorb punishment.

For the most part, the PA's ran single on the
Cleveland-Youngstown-Pittsburgh service and on former Erie territory commuter lines in New Jersey/New York.

In the 60's they were intermingled with the E8s, mostly on Train #7 and #8. Due to their faster loading qualities, they were usually assigned as the lead unit if possible. In the event that other trains required a third unit due to size, a PA was coupled ahead many times. . .The Erie's PA's were quite reliable. The EL assigned a single PA to M&E trains # 11 and # 12 most of the time.
