They must have felt pretty confident in the Alcos. ............. Randy For the most part, the PA's ran single on the Cleveland-Youngstown-Pittsburgh service and on former Erie territory commuter lines in New Jersey/New York. In the 60's they were intermingled with the E8s, mostly on Train #7 and #8. Due to their faster loading qualities, they were usually assigned as the lead unit if possible. In the event that other trains required a third unit due to size, a PA was coupled ahead many times. My experience in the Operating Dept from the mid-60's until the end of long haul passenger service was that the E's had frequent failures. It was not uncommon to have near daily reports such as "#813, #2 engine on idle due to GRA, #814, s/g not operating". The Erie's PA's were quite reliable. The EL assigned a single PA to M&E trains # 11 and # 12 most of the time. SMT **************Wondering what's for Dinner Tonight? Get new twists on family favorites at AOL Food.
