(erielack) RE: Dereco Memory, ECE?

To follow up on the question of the EL e/b on 5-15-68 (almost 40 years ago) with the N&W SD45s, I dug out some old block sheets from BJ Tower in my collection. Unfortunately, I don't have one for that exact date. But I had sheets for 5-21 and 5-22-68 indicating that TC-6 was running into Croxton in the early evening. On 5-21, TC-6 by BJ at 759 PM with the 2409; on 5-22, TC-6 by BJ at 827 PM with the 3610. Perhaps the TC-6 initially ran an earlier schedule, later moved to morning arrivals at CX. If so, then the May 15 train immortalized in Erie Lackawanna Story could have been TC-6 from Huntington. (So Paul B, you weren't wrong by much, as the ECE was the successor to TC-6).

As to the short freight I mentioned running ahead of it, it certainly could have been NE-74, which ran at that hour (on 5-21, NE74 by BJ at 748PM with 2573; on 5-22, NE74 by BJ at 659 PM with 2562). However, NE74 was usually a pretty good sized train. Some other block sheets from April, May and June 68 showed that the EL was still operating an occasional "Drop Local" east from Port Jervis in the afternoon. That was an old Erie operating tradition from the 50s, maybe before. By 1970 almost all of the e/b's out of Port were symboled (PO-98 being the "junkiest" run with the most work, as the Drop was), no more Drops or Pickups. Up thru '69 or '70 they also ran occasional e/b "Ordinaries" from Port. By 70, all of the Ordinaries on the NY Div were w/b, which avoided potential confusion. (Somebody must have a story from the 60s of an e/b Ordinary and a w/b Ordinary working simultaneously at SF, NJ or MQ).
