Interesting, I had always thought the EL was one of those few railroads that was all about being on time and was almost never late with trains. ----- Original Message ----- From: JG at graytrainpix<mailto:graytrainpix_@_hotmail.com> To: Paul Brezicki<mailto:doctorpb_@_bellsouth.net> ; EL Mailing List<mailto:erielack@lists.railfan.net> Sent: Saturday, April 05, 2008 9:31 AM Subject: (erielack) RE: Dereco Memory ECE? Paul, Sorry for the delay in getting back to you on this. I rechecked the caption for the picture in question in the Carleton book, and I didn't see any reference to the East Coast Expediter. Perhaps you have a second edition where the caption was changed? Even if so, I don't recall there being an ECE in 1968. The earliest Dereco-era fast freight sked that I have is from 1969, and it shows a TC-6 from Huntington to Croxton. However, TC-6 was scheduled for an early morning arrival in Croxton. I saw TC-6 a handful of times on the NY Division running a few hours late, say 9 or 10 AM. That was not unusual for most eastbounds, other than NY100; but 12 hours late was unusual. The TC-4 out of Buffalo was scheduled into Croxton in mid afternoon, and again it was not unusual to see it rolling thru Rutherford (NJ) around 7 or 8 PM -- my "spotter notes" from 5-15-68 say that the NW 1726 and 1759 passed BJ at 7:20PM, running just behind another eastbound with the 2553 and 2571 (which could have been NE-74). And then 15 minutes later the 910 rolled east with a caboose hop -- but it wasn't the Garfield Drill, which went east at 6:50PM that night with the 449. Oh, and the 2515 went west with a short freight at 6:40 PM, probably the NE-! 99 crew, which sometimes originated in Croxton, picked up from the NYSW at BT (Passaic Jct), perhaps did a bit of work at Suffern, then ran to MQ and Maybrook to take the NE-99 west. (TC-4 was in the 1969 freight sked, so I'm assuming that it ran in 1968, and along with TC-2 and TC-6, represented the earliest Dereco adjustments to the EL freight plan). I don't have a 1970 freight sked (or 1968 either), but the March 1971 sked lists the ECE in lieu of the TC-6; and the new Cannonball service! My earliest ECE spotting was on 6-12-70, with the 6341, 7132 and 7092 passing HX Tower (entrance to Croxton Yard) at 1027 AM. Also, NYCB passed HX that day at 843 AM with the 821, 812 and 815. Then AP2 passed HX at 1101 AM with the 3607 and 3602. Quite a morning for Dereco trains! I don't mean to split hairs here, but you and I and hopefully other people on the List are interested in EL freight plans and operations, and how they changed over the years. So perhaps this is an interesting point. Perhaps it does, in a way, reflect something from the (too short) life of the EL.
