Re: (erielack) "ON TOPIC"

Mike,

Thanks for posting that. I can say that I learned a lot from all that has
been posted in the "what if" listings and think that while it's "dreaming", the
content adds a lot of history, some of which I was not aware. I've learned a
lot.

We've learned about the ICC and the various railroads' corporate histories
and their strategies when "merger mania" came along all those years ago, EL
obviously included. I know a lot but did not know as much as what I found here,
particularly the corporate mentality at that time.

There have been many "what if" discussions over the years, but this has
offered more than those in the past. I honestly never thought about a combination
of MP-EL to form a competitive system. That never crossed my mind..

The more we talk about "what if", the more we learn about history and how
their minds thought. We look at things in hindsight but they lived it.

While I understand that the "what if" topics are not necessarily directly
EL-oriented, I have to say that the information provided by everyone sparked my
interest into doing more research on corporate history and the various
possibilites that could have been but never came to life. The exchange took me much
farther along than just the possibility of Erie-Santa Fe or NKP-DL&W or any
other combinations that have been discussed in the past.

What I would like to learn more about in the "what if" scenario is how EL
management felt about what faced them. We know they saw the writing on the wall
but from what's been presented, they didn't appear to have been very
aggressive.

Were they or not? If they were, how so? Did EL management only consider
inclusion or did they wait too long to explore other possibilities? Did EL
management ever go on the offensive?

Contact me off-list as I'm interested in further exploring "what if". Please
put "What If" in the subject matter.

All the best,

Rick
