Today's younger railfans love the modern rail scene, and that's great since it keeps the interest in the hobby going forward to future generations. As someone that grew up in the EL generation, I do find the modern stuff intriguing but lacking personality (not to mention two diesel models dominate railroads across the country). Not the diesels, mind you (though consolidation reduces the number of potential paint schemes :), but the freight cars. Technically advanced, but visually boring. I remember the halcyon days of the 1970s with all the perdiem freight cars with a rainbow of paint schemes (yet another thing leading me to model EL in 1975).
