RE: (erielack) Coal, Iron Ore and Steel



A while back I think I had seen something about a power plant at Hunlock Creek, PA which would place it along the ex-DL&W Bloomsburg Branch. Was this a source of traffic at one time? Interesting that just down the road a bit from Hunlock Creek is a nuclear plant at Berwick.

There was a small power plant in Big Flats, NY, which I think had a spur, but I don't remember seeing much in the way of coal delivery in the 70s. The transport cost east of roughly the Mississippi makes it too expensive when you already have Appalachian coal nearby. Yeah, the appalachian stuff might have a higher sulphur content, but the power plants in the east are already set up to burn the appalachian stuff anyway. The farthest trip for PRB coal that I know of was to a Florida Power & Light plant in north Florida. They barged the stuff down the Mississippi to the Gulf, then over to Apalachicola, where it was railed up the Apalachicola Northern and then east on the old SAL through Tallahassee.
