Very little low sulphur coal from Montana and the PRB has ventured east of Chicago and the Mississippi River. I'm not aware of any movements into the Northeast, but I do know of a couple to the Southeast: a BN-L&N move into Tennessee beginning in 1972, and another over NS to a power plant near Atlanta beginning in the 1990's. The economics of coal transport generally does not support movement over long distances if an alternate source is available more locally. I believe all of this coal is used in power plants and not in steelmaking. I the late 70's would powder river coal have moved east on the EL? And to where? I must admit to some limited knowledge, I do not know of powder river coal runs that far east right now heh. There are a lot of coal fields still in western PA and the Virginias.
