The story goes that a batch of ex-Erie 40' double-door cars were repainted immediately after the merger into EL's gray-with-maroon-lettering boxcar scheme, and then very quickly they were sold to the Great Northern. My question is: Were any of these cars ACTUALLY repainted? I have never seen a photo of ANY EL-lettered 40' double-door boxcars. Was this simply urban legend, and the cars that went to GN were in their Erie paint when they left? I simply cannot imagine no one got a photo of these cars!
