I just recently re-read a copy of the Jan 2008 Railpace magazine, and took note of two pictures of 40' boxcars (1 Erie, the other a DL&W Phoebe Snow billboard car) abandoned in Elmira which are being preserved. It's hard to believe that the DL&W Phoebe Snow car (of which I remember many still traversing the rails until Conrail) was one of the last if not THE last. Are there others? How many Erie 40' boxcars survive? Or, for that matter, EL? Do any of the lists keep tabs on these? I guess this probably has been discussed before, but did the EL ever purchase 40' Boxcars new? Or were they all inherited from the Erie and the DL&W?
