From the archives at Steamtown the following letter appears:
20450

March 1, 1909

Mr. G. J. Ray,
Chief Engineer.

Dear Sir:

Division Superintendent Sharp of the Erie Railroad has served notice upon the Superintendent Phillips that his company will hereafter require us to take care of the signal lamps and keep the derails free from snow in connection with operation and maintenance of interlocking plant at Erwins Crossing, half way between Coopers and Painted Post.

Superintendent Sharp quotes from an agreement dated November 13, 1900, covering the operation of this plant, as follows:

" D L & W R. R. Co., has agreed to hereafter maintain in good and sufficient condition the said interlocking switch and signal device, and all its appurtenances so as to insure the sage passing of trains of both parties as far as practicable."

We have no pervious record of this agreement. If same is in your files will you please furnish me with copy. In this connection I wish to state that the Erie people have agreed to assume one-half cost of rebuilding of small building used for the storage of oil and lamps at Erwins Crossing and will pass voucher in our favor for $92.80. I presume bill cover has been furnished by your department.

Your truly,

General Superintendent.

S-G
