On Thursday, January 21, 1971, the Erie-Lackawanna Railroad put
its first diesel-hauled "push-pull" train into service on the Erie
Main Line. New Jersey was buying 105 cars from Pullman-Standard and
23 locomotives from General Electric.
The new PATH cars also received cross seats. The new World Trade
Center PATH Terminal was slated to open in the summer of 1971 and for
several months, it had been possible to see where the new terminal
tracks joined the present tubes.
