Dave, Concerning the photo of an Erie through-line passenger train. With Paul Tupaczewski's assistance, we were able to read the number plate on the signal which governs movement on the westward main track, the number on the mast is 276-1. This location is just east of Horseheads, New York on the First Sub Division of the Susquehanna Division. Paul also compared today's maps in the area with the road and buildings in the background. My Susquehanna Division profile also helped with the correct location. Paul felt that with the train moving almost directly south at that location, along with the shadows, it would be a late summer afternoon. Looking closer at the train, behind the RPO there are three Ten-hundred series coaches, the Diner-Lounge and an additional coach. With that information, we can determine that 833 is leading eastbound No. 8, the ATLANTIC EXPRESS, which was scheduled to depart Corning at 3:17 PM. In 1960, No. 8 would have included in its consist at that location and time frame A/C coaches Chicago to Hoboken, the Diner-Lounge Marion to Hoboken and one A/C coach Hornell to Hoboken. For ease of operation, the coach was added to the train behind the Diner-Lounge at Hornell. Wellsburg is MP 266 or thereabouts. I have a photo of HO showing a long straightaway to the east. Paul B This doesn't LOOK like Horseheads. If the photo was taken west of HO Tower I would say you would have to go all the way to Big Flats to get a similar horizon as that shown in the photo. However, I do not recognize that highway alignment, with respect to the tracks, as looking anything familiar in Big Flats. Closer to HO, the Erie tracks are right up against the north side of a hill, so that can't be it. Then they make a broad curve to the south, approaching HO. There is no curve in the photo. If this photo was taken east of HO the tracks do straighten out but they are headed almost due south. The shadows don't line up with such an alignment. The photo looks like it was taken in the summer when the sun is high in the sky - my guess is somewhere between 10 am - 2 pm. If this photo was taken east of HO it would have been taken much later in the day for the shadows to line up. However, the shadows would be longer later in the day than they are in the photo. Also, I'm sure the area around HO back then was built up much less than it is today, but wouldn't you still see evidence of Route 14 to the left, between the tracks and the side of the hill? I still think the shot was taken near Wellsburg.
