(erielack) EL Trailer Reporting Marks

Ed and List,

Ed Barry asked for a representative list of non-UPS reporting marks. I did a
little research on late '75-1976 consists. I tallied two NY-99's and a
NY-100 which carried PB-100's TOFC block that day. This should comprise a
representative sample of trailers on the non-UPS trains. Here are the
results:

Total trailers: 270
No. of reporting marks: 84
ELZ: 92 (34%)
Containers: 51 (19%)
Other RR's: 39 (15%)
Lease trailers, including RR assigned: 35 (13%)
Truckers: 25 (9%)
Miscellaneous (forwarders, UPS) and unknowns: 28 (10%)

Top 8 non-UPS rep marks:

ELZ
REAZ (Realco)
PCTZ (Penn Central Transportation)
STLU (Matson Navigation)
ITSU (K-Line)
SOOZ (SOO Line)
BMZ (Boston & Maine)
CMBU ??

The most striking things here:
1. The dominance of ELZ at a time when many trailers were free-runners. EL
acquired 1,000 trailers in 1973-74 primarily for rising third-party
business.
2. The volume of containers; 3 of the top 8 above are steamship lines.
Unlike the doublestack era, most containers were mixed in with trailers and
most were handled on chassis.
3. The large variety of rep marks, most of which appear only once or twice.

The main UPS trains, CX-99 and 2/NY-100, were comprised of approx 50% UPSZ,
with the balance in the proportions listed above. A/CX-99 was about 25%
UPSZ. A lot of parcels were loaded on non-UPS trailers.

Overall, the top 3 rep marks on EL were ELZ, UPSZ and REAZ. A representative
fleet for 1975-76 would consist of the following: 25% ELZ, 25% UPSZ, 15%
containers, 35% everything else.
