This started as a reply to Don Kern's mail reply formatting problem, but this is probably a good time for the periodic list etiquette reminder and general list information post. Please take the time to read the included information. On Tue, 4 Dec 2007 Don Kern opined: > Sorry but it seems that sometimes what I snip off before sending posts is > reappearing in the post without spaces after my message if this continues > Ill change my subscription over to my other addy that I usually use only for > private emails to family Don, It has to do with the "Rich Text" quoted-printable encoding that your hotmail account is using. listmail works much better for everyone when your mailer is set to use plain vanilla ASCII text (sometimes called just "plain text") with the line wrap set to 77 or 78 columns. For emails that are quoted 3 or more replies deep, shorter line wrap settings (like 70 columns) can enhance readability so that quoted lines don't wrap for just one single word. The list software distributes listmail as plain ASCII text so that it is 100% compatible with ALL email programs on any computer platform. It has always been this way and it is the only practical way to do it at this time. it does its best to convert "rich text" and HTML posts to plain text, but due to the never-ending variations of encoding methods it sometimes results in hard to read posts. Things are much nicer when the listmail comes in already formatted as plain text as no translation needs to be done to it. The following may work for Hotmail to turn off Rich Text: http://www.expita.com/nomime.html#hotmail That site also has tips for other email programs to configure them to send plain text: http://www.expita.com/nomime.html When replying to list mail, please snip off the portions of your quoted text that are not necessary to the current discussion. You only need to include enough quoted text for the rest of us to know what you are talking about. This is especially important when replying to Digest version listmail as we really don't want an entire day's worth of quoted digest text being sent to every list member! When replying to a digest, please change the Subject line to reflect the subject of the post to which you are replying. It makes it much easier to tell what you are talking about and easier for someone to search the list archive. You may attach photos your list posts and they will be extracted from your email and archived to our List Photo website. The list will accept only JPEG and GIF photo attachments, all others will be discarded. Please try to post the most reasonable size image you can. If it is a digital camera image or scan, please process the photo or scan to a reasonable size for viewing before you send it to the list. Most all digital cameras and scanners come with at least some basic image processing software. If there is a setting for "Quality" or "JPeg Compression," please set it to about 2/3 to 3/4 of the range, high for Quality, low for Compression. If you have a PDF or WORD document you wish to share, feel free to email a copy of it to me and I will see what can be done to put it on the list. If you have an image that is not a JPEG or GIF and can't chnage the format, I'll be happy to do that for you. Please try to keep your posts relevant to the EL and its predecessors in some way. Some list members are very intolerant of off-topic discussions and it can be quite disruptive when an off-topic thread degenerates into a complaint thread. On the other side of the coin, please be tolerant of short diversions from EL content as we are a "community" of enthusiasts and it is somewhat important that we get along with each other. If you wish to unsubscribe you can use the link at the bottom of each post to request to be unsubscribed or simply drop Paul Tupaczewski or me an email requesting to be removed from the list. When requesting to be unsubscribed, please make sure to provide the subscribed address if it is different from the address from which you are sending the request. If you are using AOL please be sure that you are not somehow automatically reporting listmail as spam to AOL. This has been a chronic problem and I honestly don't know what you have to do to prevent it from happening, but you should be able to find out from AOL's member FAQ, Support web pages or phone tech support. I periodically see that list mail to a member is bounced as spam so you may wish to consult your spam filter vendor's support or ISP's support to find out how to ensure that the "erielack" listmail is delivered to you. Lately, I have seen several members' ISPs bouncing email back to us reporting that their email boxes were full. Bounces get annoying as both Paul and I receive copies of each bounced list mail. If email is still bouncing after 24 to 48 hours I generally unsubscribe the offending address. On occasion the mail server reports to me that a list member's email address is undeliverable due to a "User Unknown" error from the member's email server. I unsubscribe those addresses after two consecutive list mails have been bounced with that error. Some ISPs have erroneously configured their email servers to report User Unknown when blocking spam, but there is no way to know when that happens so I have to take their error reports at face value. If you don't receive any "erielack" list mail for 48 hours or so, Paul or I will be happy to verify your list subscription, just drop us an email. Paul Tupaczewski is the EL List "owner' and moderator. I am the list mail server administrator, programmer and problem solving lackey.
