RE: (erielack) U34CH #3380 in 1976

Nice shot! That picture brings back fond days of my
first job at Prudential in Newark. I started in 1973,
had no car but lived with my parents in Indian Lake
and our house overlooked the tracks and Denville
station. It was just a matter of walking down the hill
and alongside the tracks to get to the station.

In spite of the nostalgia, the old electrics were not
fun for a commuter. Cold in the winter, hot in the
summer and very noisy - I yearned for a ride on the
Boonton line.

During the summer of '73, Prudential adopted gliding
hours and my wish was granted. I was able to adjust my
schedule to allow an occasional inbound trip on the
Boonton line. It was great! Quiet cars, welded track,
and new scenery to look at.

I assumed all Boonton line trains stopped at Newark.
The joke was on me one morning when I was at the
station earlier than normal. Resigned to the fact that
this was my usual day to ride the 'electrics', I was
delighted when the first train to show up was the
U34CH on the Boonton line. The joke was on me,
however, as the train blasted through Newark and
didn't stop until we got to Hoboken. I could do
nothing but wait until the next oubound left although
I noticed I wasn't the only one whom was supposed to
get off at Newark!
