During the period from about 1958 until the E-L merger, Erie passenger trains used the DL&W station in Binghamton following the routing of DL&W trains over the Erie between Binghamton and Corning. I can't recall if the Erie trains actually came over on the DL&W to reach the DL&W depot or whether they stayed on the Erie and passengers had to walk over to the old Erie platforms. When the trackage at Binghamton was revised to handle the diversion to Erie rails west of Binghamton there was no crossover installed to permit trains leaving the DL&W depot to get back on the Erie line to Port Jervis, etc. without making a backing move. Seems that the EL merger was forseen and the minimization of passenger service on the Erie line so they did not go to the expense of installing crossovers along with the additional signaling, switch controls, etc. When the EL diverted all passenger service via Scranton excpet for one taken train over the Erie through Pt. Jervis I do recall that this train (#22?) pulled out of the DL&W deot and then backed through the connection at BD cabin to get to the eastbound Erie. Anyone have any personal knowledge of this??
