This picture looks like it was taken right after a track reduction from 4 to 2 tracks. Probably in the late 50s. It appears to be the Hoboken to Washington local that carried an RPO and express messenger. I used to watch this train come through Mountain View in the summer and always thought it odd that the express and RPO were placed in the middle of the train rather than at the head end. Sometime around 1958 the express car was removed and the RPO was placed in between the passenger cars. I believe sometime in 1959 the mail contract ended followed by the application to discontinue this train and 1009 and its counterpart back to Hoboken. I think the trains came off in 1960. I suppose the Branchville train forwarded milk an MU at Dover until the end.
It's great to see those bright electric red marker lights and the bullseye red light on the gate.
