The stairway went to the Boonton line platform closest to the tower. After the track rearrangement, That platform was no where near track. There were these pavement pathways that crossed over where the old track was and another paved platform along the remaining track. As I recall these pavement pathways were 2-3 feet high and were all uneven and just in real bad shape in the 83-85 time frame. I always wondered how many people came tumbling off of these at night. The first few steps were concrete and the rest were wood. I guess they were ripped out in the late 80's? They were falling down by then. I recall the guy who rented the station for his newspaper business also. He had a cream colored early 70's Chevy van. I always thought it was him that wrecked the inside of the station. I clearly remember holes in the floor, The wooden benches inside were all broken, and the ticket booth area was destroyed. There was always a ton of garbage inside when he was there also. I also recall on the west end of the station along the Morristown line, there were some kind of big sliding wooden doors. I never seen them open though. I'm guessing they were for baggage use?? I never knew LS Young had their own switch and a coal dock. By the time I got around that way, they no longer used the RR, and all that was gone. They had a wooden fence like structure that wad divided into different compartments for each type of Coal they sold. I remember 2 old guys showing us how their conveyors worked. They are now in Whippany at the museum there. There were always long strings of freight cars parked in Denville. Sometimes there were so many, the stub ended track that runs down to Rt 80 was full all the way down to where it becomes overgrown, and the other leg of the wye would have cars all the way down behind the AnP store. There were lots of tank cars but most were Southern Boxes. I spent a lot of time around Denville station in the mid 80's. BTW, A big thanks to Ed Wheeler for posting all those Boonton line pics, They were great!! Mike D. - -----Original Message----- From: secbyte_@_ptd.net [mailto:secbyte@ptd.net] I was just thinking about that fountain while catching up on the thread. Thank you guys for explaining the wye to me I get it. I always wondered why the stairway was coming up from rt 53. It is on the drawing from pat as a wooden one but as I recall it was concrete. Anyone know where that stairway went? By the 1970s it seemed to go nowhere. On Riches drawing he shows the freight house. I never know that was there nor did I ever know about the fountain. It must have been a real nice area. I was in the station many times as I knew the guy renting it for his newspaper business. I think his name was Phil and I remember an old Chevy van he drove, I remember thinking how nice the station was and at the time did not understand why it was not manned or used. I was sad to see it torn down, I had always hoped to rent it and do something with it, like a hobby shop or a restaurant. As kids we spend a lot of time around that tower and station. This was a really nice thread. Ah! Memories.....
