Re: (erielack) EL baggage cars off their home rails

Thanks Steve, that does make sense, and since your post had EL content you
don't need to worry about the LP.

At the risk of being chastised by the List Police, I'd like to comment on
the above and the response by both Paul and Dale. It does have some
connection
to the list as it involves Youngstown as the EL and P&LE had joint service
into Youngstown with some trains.

Former PRR-PC-Conrail-NS Pittsburgh area Asst Supt Max Solomon II many
times
told me of his first railroad employment tasks which was actually a NYC
Asst
TM at Ashtabula, OH. That is a little known fact as Max lives, breathes
and
bleeds PRR, but he worked for a very short time on the NYC. Max was in
charge of supervising the passenger train switching moves at Ashtabula. In
the
very early 1960's there was still a nightly train #277 from Pittsburgh to
Youngstown (NYC Station) that continued on as follows: NYC #272 YO to
Ashtabula,
#28 Ash to Buffalo, #371 (NYC-TH&B-CP) Buffalo to Toronto and from Buffalo
east the train was still #28 to Albany and Boston. Through cars were
carried
from Pittsburgh to Ashtabula and Buffalo. Some cars were removed at
Ashtabula went west on the NYC. At one time there was a nightly Pullman on
the train for Massena due to Alcoa headquarters in Pittsburgh and the plant
in
Massena, but that is a subject for the passenger cars lists, not this list.

During that time period the EL-P&LE had through service Cleveland to
Pittsburgh via the Youngstown EL station. Those trains contained checked
baggage
and storage mail.

It is entirely possible that the EL baggage car in question on the original
post (en route Toronto) moved
Youngstown-Cleveland-(Youngstown)-Pittsburgh-Ashtabula-Buffalo-Toronto.
During the late 50's and early 60's I would
certainly think that Pittsburgh could generate an entire carload of mail
for Toronto
and via.
