Did they ever route a fast freight (74s, 97s, 98s, 99s, 100s) down the First via Youngstown for traffic reasons, say if a 100 would otherwise face a run of westbounds on the cut-off? I'm sure it happened for derailments and what-not, but I wondered if it was considered a regular traffic option. Jim Yes it did happen---Photo on page 31 of Trackside around Youngstown with Dave McKay by SMT shows an eastbound ore drag passing the Youngstown Terminal Building with a westbound piggyback train passing it. I would say probably once ever other day one of the 98 99 or 100 sections would operate 1st Sub-Division account opposing traffic. Usually the NE-74 and NY-74's were kept on the 2nd Sub-Division as they were super hot trains. 2.) Did any of the road freights headed for Meadville and points east ever stop at SN to set out small blocks for First sub points like Niles and Brier Hill, then and then proceed via the cut-off? If so, did they shuttle switch jobs out to SN to retrieve such cars, or wait for the next 78 or 94 to take them? Again, yes it did happen but not frequently. Trains that had traffic for Brier Hill had a reason to operate that way---they also picked up at Brier Hill. I do recall train 94 having 10 or 12 cars for Brier Hill and we would need the power in Meadville or the freight in Meadville to make a Buffalo train connection, the 94 would cut at SN Jct and pull the Brier Hill cars into the EB siding and go 2nd Sub-Division. Cars were usually forwarded on 156 to Brier Hill. Brier Hill switch jobs did not leave Brier Hill switching limits (Avon). First of all, they were too busy and second of all, they got extra pay for leaving the yard limits. Additional straight time pay--so if the trip took three hours, they entire crew got three hours additional pay and the first out crew road extra list would also be able to collect a full days penalty. Costly! 3.) Sorry, one more -- east of Meadville, did the EL keep running the RC-98 and MF-74 up to Buffalo thru early 1976? I would imagine that after April 76, Conrail had no need for those runs. Yes, they ran right up to Conrail day-one and possibly for a while after day-one. I am not certain when they came off. Perhaps Mr. Heckman could help out.
