Subject: (erielack) Wreck at Delaware Water Gap In 75
Does anyone know if a load of corvettes was wrecked in this wreck in 1975 at
Delaware Water Gap? A gentlemen called the booking number for ELDPS
excursion tickets asking this question? I am not sure what got destroyed as
far as freight but this was the wreck which took out a CNJ engine as well as
at least one EL unit. If memory serves at least two engines went into the
river.
He is also looking for any info on this wreck. Are there any articles
anyone can remember? Joel E. Long
While I can't provide any relevant information on this wreck and whether or
not it actually happened, I can tell you that this guy is not the only person
to have heard this story. As a teenager in the 70's, I went to a summer camp in
Pennsylvania and every year we went rafting down the Delaware River. I
remember hearing rumors of a trainload of Corvettes derailing and dumping down a
large, rocky hill into the river. The place pointed out as the wreck site is a
couple/few road miles above Hawks Nest, north of Port Jervis. Where Highway 97
gets back down to river level and parallels the water there is another stream
that comes in. If you stopped here and walked into the woods, you would find
some wonderful ruins from the D&H canal, and across the river you should see
some huge cement retaining walls - the wreck site was supposedly just a little
bit down from this spot. I have pictures of the area - somewhere.
Some wonderful, long trains used to run through there back then, though
only a few day if I recall correctly. Are those tracks still used?
