Remember that the EMDs were 2-cycle engines, so had twice as many firings as 4-cycles at the same rpm. This was most noticable at idle, when the EMDs would go, "dum-dum-dum-dum" while the Alcos and other would say, " DUBBatta-DUBBatta in the same time frame. Also, remember that EMDs 567 engines had Rootes blowers to help the aspiration; this would be more noticable at higher rpm. I rode behind a 4-axle FM last weekend at the NC Trans. Museum. The museum personnel told me the loco still had its original OP engine, but at low speed it sounded an awful lot like a 567.
