I found at least one E8 unit still without the lightening bolt (and shield) in August 1952 (DeYoung 1998, Trackside with Robert Collins, p 98, 103). Carleton (The Erie Story, 1984) also made a point that by 1954 all radio-equipped units wore the lightening bolts (in his description of the new bay window cabooses). This also appeared in the Dec 1954 Erie Employee's magazine (cover and p 5) in the brief description of the exhibit for railroad week October 15 through 22. One other change I hadn't noticed before is that the lightening bolts were changed to yellow by merger time (or maybe it was for merger time) as several 1960s pictures illustrate. I will keep looking, but this summer has not got the time as in past years because of the heat, wildfires and smoke (July has had 27 of 30 days at or above 90, with 8 days officially in the 3-digit range here in Helena--unusually hot for Montana). There are at least 37 wildfires burning in Montana as of 5 PM yesterday, about 100,000 acres just around home. List content--makes us think we're still in the exhaust of all those Erie PAs that helped rest the E8s after they arrived. Or the air some days in the 1950s/60s before the Clean Air Act (1970). If you thought you lost the picture of passenger cars in the haze of Jersey City or Hoboken, we can do that now with all this smoke.
