The unit is an RS-2. RS-2s were delivered with steam generators but without this thingie on the outside. RS-3s and all other makes and models, with S/G or without, lacked this visible detail. The difference is that the RS-2's fuel tank is under the cab floor; all others are between the trucks. The RS-2 has no space under the cab; all the others do. On the Erie, and EL, the device is on the fireman's side when the long hood is the "F" end. As previously mentioned, the escaping air in the cabs of some earlier units, was an annoyance.
