RE: (erielack) piggyback service

Paul and List,

I had just emailed Todd Stearns in response to his question on the subject, so I might as well send it to everyone. I've come across only one CNJ trailer in the consists so far; most of the trailers on the SE-98/ES-99 appear to have been ELZ's.

It woud be helpful to know what year you're modeling. Trailer fleets tend to change rapdly and this certainly was the case during the EL years. So the trailers in use in 1975 were mostly not around in the late 60's. My consists date from May '75 to March '76, ie the final EL months.

A few things to consider:

1. UPS was the biggest EL intermodal customer, so there were many UPSZ. These were concentrated on the 3 UPS schedules, although a few would show up on the regular 99/100. By 1975, most were the drop-frames (prior to 1974, almost all were straight-frame rib-sides with roll-up doors). Half the UPS traffic was plan II1/2 in non-UPS trailers.
2. EL went on a HUGE trailer buying spree in '73-'74 acquiring 1,000 rib-side trailers from Fruehauf and Trailmobile in several orders; this was mostly for the surging plan II1/2 business.
3. The "free-runner" era had begun, so RR trailers behaved like Railbox cars: "next load, any road". So "foreign" trailers were not necessrily in interchange service.
4. Perishables, esp meat, was a fraction of its earlier volume, as was Plan I (motor carrier) traffic.
5. Lots of containers by '75, most riding with chassis rather than on-deck.

So what would your trailer fleet look like? Concentrating on roadnames you're most likely to find decals for,
Most common: ELZ, UPSZ
Other RR's: esp Penn Central (NYCZ), Santa Fe (SFTZ), Vermont Ry (VTRZ)
Truckers : Navajo, Spector
Forwarders: Lifschultz, Clipper (CXXZ)
Lease Cos. Realco (REAZ), Xtra (XTRZ)
Containers: esp K-line, Mitsui OSK

I'm putting together TOFC operations for my E-L layout.

I've found pix of most northeast railroads.....but not the CNJ.

Did they have pig flats and trailers ?
