(erielack) Mini-review: "Trackside around Youngstown with Dave McKay"

Hi everyone,

I received this book two days ago. Having finally been to Youngstown for
the ELHS convention a few years back, I was curious to see "what once
was". A good sign is always when you get a book that has a LARGE photo
of EL PA1 861 on the cover :) And another plus is that the book is
written by lister (and former EL employee) Steve Timko!

The book is arranged by railroad, with the EL taking up rougly the first
third of the book (it's the largest amount of space devoted to a single
road in this book). Author Timko shines here - his writing is
authoritative (nice to have an employee doing this!), with a lot of the
facts seemingly second nature to him from his experience.

Photographer McKay's work is superb, and there are plenty of shots of
stuff that really should have been covered better in the past, and am
glad to see them covered here: black/yellow diesels of all kinds, but
most notably the Lima and Baldwin switchers. Also many shots of the
Train Masters in and out of their expected ore train enviroment (there's
a particularly neat shot of a single H24-66 leading a train with two
crew members hanging out on the front platform, making it look like a
local). Mr. McKay obviously cared about proper lighting, since the vast
majority of the images are perfectly exposed. Another nice feature is
that there are several photos shot down from overhead bridges, revealing
a lot of detail on top of the units that you would normally never see
from ground-level shots, a great thing for modelers.

I only skimmed the rest of the content, but it seems equally intriguing,
especially if you've been to the area. Seeing the view off the Center
St. bridge "as it used to be" is great, considering today it resembles a
large field with two sets of tracks).

Highly recommended, and kudos to Steve on an excellent job covering a
west-end location that has had a dearth of coverage to date!
