Re: Fw: (erielack) EL and Major Interchange Partners and SF-100

Steve, Paul, List,

The Passing Report from 1967 didn't contain any runthrus because these didn't start until 1968. Evidently EB and WB Chicago interchange was handled differently by EL in the early 70's. EB transfer cuts from connecting roads would come into 51st St where they were reshuffled for various EL trains. For example, the BN transfer from Cicero would arrive by the 5am cutoff for NE-74 with BN road power; traffic for Maybrook and NY terminal would be added to the BN traffic for these locations and depart at 9:45am as
NE-74. BN traffic for other points would be deferred to other departures, eg: D&H/B&M to TC-100 dp at 3pm. The ATSF transfer arrived 51st St in early evening, was classified in a similar manner, and the Dover and NY terminal cars went on NY-98 dp at 11:30pm. Until mid-1972 this train was called SF-100.

WB traffic was sorted at Marion for the Chicago connections, most of it bypassing 51st St. Some of this traffic arrived at Marion pre-blocked. For example, NE-97 dp Port Jervis with BN and ATSF blocks. Trains dp Marion blocked for connections but some blocks were combined to Huntington, then split into sections. For example, BN-99 and SFE-97 often left Marion as one train, then split at Huntington, with SFE-97 running directly to Corwith and BN-99 to Cicero. So 51st St classified mostly EB traffic and Marion mostly WB.

Paul B. and Paul S. (are there too many Paul's on this list?),

On my Marion Trainsheets the only interchange partner 100 showing is SF100. The trainsheets are from 1972. As far as the Passing Report (1967), there is nothing on there showing any run thru power or freights of the [insert Chicago area road]100 variety. In my Chicago Blue Book (1973) the eastbounds are all broken out with cutoff times from the connecting roads and how those interchanges are effected. From there it lists all eastbound movements out of Chicago and as of 1973 there was no MILW100 or RI100 or SF100 or any other train of that sort. For example:

RI delivered to 51st street with a cutoff of 2:00 am; P/B rubbered to 51st Street; if any NY terminal P/B traffic, out in 2/NY100 same day; Boston, B&M, D&H and S&U P/B traffic out in PB100 same day; other Boston, B&M, D&H and S&U traffic out in TC100 same day; PCH and NY Terminal out in NE74 same day; Brier Hill, Buffalo and Meadville traffic out in MF74 same day; balance of traffic out in 78 for further classification in Marion. Based on the make up of MF74, 78's make up most likely consisted of traffic destined for points in Ohio that were west of Youngstown - Akron, Cleveland, Mansfield, Harding, Ashland, Wadsworth, Barberton, Dayton and so on - and was classified into the appropriate train originating in Marion for those points from there.

There is not a single instance of any of the 100's of the MILW, SF, RI and so on listed. The above description is pretty standard for all the Chicago area roads in the Blue Book. The reverse is broken out quite detailed with the movements from Marion to the connecting roads in Chicago with BN99, SFE97, CEI 97, CNW97, MILW97, ICG97, RI99, CO97. These all appear on the Marion Trainsheets as westbounds.

Going back to the Trainsheets - the BN power, as a standard, showed up eastbound on NE74 but on one occasion was eastbound on SF100 and a plastic extra. There was no MILW, RI or ATSF power evident for the months worth of sheets I have. BN power returned west on NE97, NY99, HF97 and in one instance on a lite w/cab movement.

  Steve

    Steve,

I know you're busy with the Passing Report, but can you shed some light on this with what you've come across on the PR and the Marion trainsheets? I recall the latter showed BN power coming east exclusively on NE-74. IIRC, the PR is 1968 vintage so may predate the runthrus.

When I was hanging out at Shenango tower on the Mahoning 2nd, those trains
when running were referred to by the dispatcher and operators as Santa Fe
100, Burlington 100, Rock Island 100 and Milwaukee 100. I do not recall if
they were noted as such on the train sheet, though all officially went down
    as Extra [lead unit number].
