Team tracks were generally used for carload freight; the platforms were generally sued for LCL. Carload shuippers used their own employees to load and unload; railroad employees had better unions (hence platforms and ramps <g>).
This a all a fascinating subject which railfan historians often overlook. And neither team tracks ("public sidings" and LCL should be confused with Express and Railway Express Agency (nee Adams, Wells Fargo, etc).
