RE: (erielack) Re: ELHS and equipment

To all:

SGL has stated for the record the goals of ELHS and why the Society is in existence. In regard to the Society's goals, they have done a good job in fulfilling their stated mission. However, they now have to deal with the possible movement of the EL Archive. This will require time and effort on their part to find a facility which fulfills the requirements that ELHS has decided on.

SGL is also correct on why ELDCPS was formed. Specifically because ELHS was and is not interested in owning equipment. That statement does not in any way demean ELHS, they just do not want to own equipment. Although ELHS and ELDCPS are two separate non-profit Society's, both of us are Sister Society's committed to the preservation of EL history and operations, with ELDCPS focused on equipment acquisition and restoration. Because of the complexity and demands of equipment restoration, the ELDCPS Board has plenty to do!

ELDCPS has a defined specific mission and vision, which in some shape or form we work on every day to achieve. It is not an easy task to restore equipment that last saw regular service on EL through-line passenger trains in January 1970. In some cases, the following years have not been kind to the equipment. Not only are we striving for historical accuracy, but the equipment must be able to perform reliably in today's environment. Any equipment restoration is a capital intensive undertaking, and part of the work of the ELDCPS Board is to raise the funds needed for restoration.

We are the only passenger train oriented non-profit in North America with the stated mission of restoring a complete pre-Amtrak passenger train, with historically correct Dining, Coach and Pullman service. Our vision is to welcome you on board, and operate the train as historically and accurately as possible, as an example of how Americans once traveled by private passenger train. In this case, ELDCPS was formed by Erie, Lackawanna and Erie Lackawanna fans, so we have focused our efforts on the restoration of an EL passenger train. Fortunately, we have located enough equipment to make this a reality. Plus, we have commitments to operate the train once it is restored on former Erie Lackawanna mainlines that are now operated by short-line railroads.

With adequate fundrasing, we should see G/M/Y painted on former EL equipment this year.

Many ELHS members are also ELDCPS members. But we count on ELHS members who are not ELDCPS members for support and purchases through our store. This is logical, as all will benefit when the restored "LAKE CITIES" welcomes you on board.

Kind regards,

John Boehner, VP
ELDCPS

Subject: RE: (erielack) Re: ELHS and equipment?

I will restate what has been stated many times before. I don't quite think it's a clarification.
The ELHS is committed to the preservation of two-dimensional historical materials related to the
Erie, DL&W, and Erie Lackawanna railroads, and related lines. We have a very few objects. The only
piece of prototype equipment we own, and have presently placed on loan with the French Creek Valley
Railroad Historical Society, is the preserved caboose C356. C356 was a gift to the ELHS from the EL
Estate, courtesy of Barney Donahue, the last person who was responsible for the execution of the EL
Estate's dissolution. We do not have any interest in owning any other prototype equipment.

I rather feel that this is not so much a "policy against owning equipment" as a policy FOR the
preservation of paper, photographs, drawings and similar materials.

We were very pleased to see the establishment of the ELDCPS, which we see as a sister Society,
dedicated to the preservation of the equipment we are not going to get involved with. We wish them
all the success possible.
