Re: (erielack) archives restrictions

That's right, nobody brought up electronic storage and internet availability, that some feel the files are not available for research now, or that they felt Larry and his staff are not doing anything.

  Until Scranton was brought up.

Well, as long as the collection will be properly catalogued and
available--ideally on-line--then I would agree with you. But I think there
are some of us who feel that that part hasn't been properly attended to and
that there has been no plan articulated that would address the issue of
availability. In other words, the overriding goal seems to be to keep the
collection in house, as it were, but not doing anything with it
necessarily. I'll add that "in house" appears to be somewhere within the
state of Ohio.

That is one of the two main issues here.

Some (including apparently the board) see the archives as being owned by
the society, and see no reason to give that up and have no control over
what happens to them tomorrow, next year, or 25 years from now. There's a
great deal of risk involved that we don't really need.

Mike,

Perhaps that's the issue here...that some view the Collection as their
personal property. If one does, then your analogy would seem reasonable.
Otherwise, with all due respect, it's a specious analogy.

OK how may people here would sign over the deed to their house to the
federal government, and trust that in the coming years, they will make
decisions that are in your best interest? And the interest of your heirs?

Anyone?

Second question, WHY???

The fact that "The Society MUST control the collection says you have
already
decided against Steam Town.

Most of the restrictions listed in your letter can be overcome by a proper
gifting agreement.

Let us not write up so many restriction that the archives become trash
because no proper location can be found that will agree with them.

Keep an open attitude, please.
