RE: (erielack) FW: Former EL SD45-2's spotted in Conway!

Paul,

NJ to Altoona via Conway? I don't think so. They would have been setoff at Altoona enroute. They do look good in B&W, but noone will argue they looked better in GMY! Conway is a monster. It underwent a major upgrade and modernization in the late '50's to become the most important yard on PRR. It was the last double hump (EB and WB) yard on CR; one of the humps was deactivated either by NS or during the final year or two of CR. I recall going there on a prototype tour (1990?) during the NMRA convention in Pittsburgh. I spotted a couple of ex-EL 40' trailers used for storage, and of course I was the only one who got excited 8^) It was a very enjoyable convention. Enroute to P-burgh we stayed at the Holiday Inn Cumberland which is near the west end of the big CSX ex-B&O yard. Naturally our room was trackside and naturally we got very little sleep (my wife had her fill of railroading before we ever got to the convention).

One humerous little story: The bus driver on one of the layout tours was African American and very chatty. He related how the previous day he had been assigned to drive the bus for the Knox, Kane and Kinzua prototype tour. When he reported for duty at the bus depot, he was told he was assigned to the "KKK tour". He said, "You've got the wrong man!" He had all of us in stitches.

Near Pittsburgh, PA - this is a former PRR yard.

Not sure, but I was surprised to see them away from their usual northern
NJ haunt. I'm guessing they're headed to Altoona for a scheduled
inspection?
