Re: (erielack) Stock pen re-request - ELHS collection

Dear Pat and All,

I was surprised to read that Tri-State's collection is now at Steamtown. Several years ago when Tri-State was beginning to assess their collection, I called Steamtown on behalf of Messrs. Bill Wilkie, Barry Levitt and Mike Delvecchio who were endeavoring to sort through the material. The Steamtown representative at the time (and I've unfortunately forgotten her name) was most professional and knowledgeable in providing us with some excellent suggestions on how to go about cataloging the collection. Being less active in Tri-State in more recent years, I was unaware of the progress the group had made. However, I'm delighted to hear that Steamtown has the collection since you clearly have the resources and inclination to not only catalog and preserve the information, but to disseminate it as well.

I was also unaware that the ELHS archive is in need of a new home. If indeed this is true, I'd like to encourage the ELHS Board of Directors to consider Steamtown. I can't think of another organization outside of the various rail historical societies that has a more genuine interest in preserving, promoting, and educating the public (and us fans) on the history of the DL&W/Erie/EL. Certainly Steamtown seems to have the wherewithal to do it.

One final thought for the members on this list, is it possible that the combination of the Tri-State collection along with the ELHS collection at Steamtown would represent enough critical mass to appeal to Syracuse University to donate the EL corporate photograph collection so that it's all in one place?
