Re: (erielack) DL&W truck mystery

I don't know much about this topic, but I seem to have read that most of the
anthracite roads had subsidiary coal companies to mine and market their coal
so their particular brand could be sold to any dealer who wanted it. I
would say as far as the dealer was concerned he was doing business with the
coal company and not the railroad that owned the coal company. The fact
that the railroad and the coal company had nearly the same name would be
irrelevant as to where the coal was marketed and sold. The coal could be
shipped anywhere due to "the wonders of interchange" - which is rather
obvious. Any dealer who wanted to be a franchise or dealer affiliate of a
certain coal company would likely have the rights to plaster that coal
company's name all over it's buildings and equipment as a means of
advertising. Therefore, the names and logos of the Lackawanna, D&H,
Reading, LV and all the rest could be seen in places far removed from the
home rails of these lines.
