Rich,

Henry is correct, both the Erie and DL&W East Buffalo Yards were
used right up to Conrail. The track connecting the two massive yards
was known to EL men locally as the "Panama".

About 20% of the Erie yard was sold off for industrial development
soon after the merger. This was the section east of Bailey Ave, south
of the North Yard.

The DL&W Yard also sold off about 20% of the yard, mostly some
of the shop buildings off Halstead Ave.

It seems in 1961 the entire Buffalo area started to realign its yards.
You had the Erie, DL&W, NYC, Nickel Plate, Wabash, B&O, Canadian
National, C&O, LV, Buffalo Creek, South Buffalo and PRR. You also
had the TH&B running into town and I think Grand Trunk and CPR. It
was hard to go more than 4 or 5 blocks before you ran into tracks!
Those were the days!

Attached is a news clipping talking about the yard situation in 1961.
