Re: (erielack) Binghamton/Sayre Connections
Seems like we have been over this Owego thing many times.
I have a D&H bluepint of the track arrangement around the area of the Erie
station in binghamton. On the drawing there is a note that clearly states
the D&H exchanged trackage rights for the Erei to switch to the Moon Feed Co
for the right of D&H trains to run to Owego on Erie rails.
JJ Young Jr and I described the whole history and operation in an article in
the very first edition of RAILFAN magazine.
Orginally the D&H only went to Owego and interchanged cars there with the
LV. Later on an arrangment was worked out with the unions to allow LV crews
to go from Sayre to Binghamton on the daylight run and D&H crews to make the
run at night, although this was oftern reversed.
Wheile ahving the apperance of a sleepy branchile run, the oeprations were
part of a highle scheduled operation beween the west and New England points.
On the daytime run the LV got cars from the NKP at Buffalo after midnight.
They got them to the D&H at Binghamton that day and then the D&H got them to
the B&M at Mechanicsville before midnight. Thus nither the LV or the D&H
paid per diem on the cars.
While working at IBM in Owego a few railfan buddies and I used to go into
Owego at lunch to watch the LV train come over on to the EL. EL dispatchers
were not too sympathetic.....sometimes the LV had to wait an hour or more to
get over onto EL rail. Usually the wait was for NY99 to pass but sometimes
congestion in Binghanton made the dispatcher have the LV wait at Owego.
At any rate,it was an interesting operation and always the darling of locat
railfans!
