RE: (erielack) More Cutoff info

Paul,

In my opinion--and I'm not an engineer either--it appears that this may be
the result of the bridge being only 65 feet above the normal water level of
the Delaware River. The other three Lackawanna viaducts--Paulins Kill (115
feet), Martins Creek (150 feet?) and Nicholson (240 feet)--are much taller
and their structures don't get nearly the same amount of exposure to
moisture, not to mention that the Delaware is a much wider river than what
is crossed with the other three bridges....and having the tall surrounding
hills, the lingering dampness is greater around the Delaware. Not a
scientific analysis, but perhaps a plausible explanation. Also, the
Lackawanna was still experimenting with concrete mixtures, so they may have
not perfected the mixture that would have been optimal under those
conditions. Clearly, the other three bridges are in much better structural
condition. Also, I wonder when the last time any of the viaducts had any
kind of maintenance??

Chuck

Seriously? I know there's been some minor concrete leaching, but "new
arches?" Are they serious???

Not being a civil engineer, I can't attest to the bridge's strength, but
having walked across it several times, it sure seems substantial to me.
