For most of its DL&W and EL years, the Syracuse and Utica Branches were operated with ex-DL&W freight GP7s. In fact, it was rare in EL years to see one of these 15 units (1270-1284) elsewhere on the EL system. I've seen photos of other units from time to time up there, but the GP7s were the "defacto standard" up there. The GP9s appeared to be wanderers in EL years - they seemed to go wherever they were needed, and since their brake system allowed MU'ing with other EL power, they were appropriate for road freights as well. Joshua Blay can undoubtedly offer much more information than I can here, and more authoritatively. - Paul The Erie Lackawanna Mailing List Sponsored by the ELH&TS http://www.elhts.org ------------------------------
