Happy New Year, everyone! Time to put up this year's EL calendar... The January photo is a gloomy, rainy day on the Erie main line in Hawthorne, NJ on January 5, 1963. The gloom and the urban elements (smokestacks in the background, old factory buildings in the distance) make it somewhat of a depressing shot. Even though it's 1963, the scene is still almost pure Erie - an Erie GP7 (marred only by an EL logo over the Erie diamond on the long hood side) pulling a pair of Erie Stillwells. The train is ducking under the Susquehanna main, and adding to the "gloom" is the old painted sign on the bridge that used to proudly announce that this was the "SUSQUEHANNA R.R.", but the sign is rusting and almost unreadable. Nice touches to the scene include the lineside poles, the outdated telltales for the NYS&W bridge, the REALLY TALL phone and/or power poles to get over both railroads, and those odd-shaped tanks in the lot directly to the left of the GP7. The wet weather does a good job of making the stick-rail right of way look very nicely manicured, though! :) - Paul The Erie Lackawanna Mailing List Sponsored by the ELH&TS http://www.elhts.org ------------------------------
