Re: (erielack) M&E Triple TRack.

Bob,

One additional point, which you may find interesting. Where I lived in
South Orange, next to the M&E, our property line was unique amongst our
neighbors in that it went up to the fence line for the tracks. The rest of
our neighbors' property lines--including our next door neighbor, Martin
Breitsprecher, who worked for the Lackawanna ca. 1905-1955--were set back
about 10-15 feet from the fence. According to Mr. Breitsprecher, the DL&W
had acquired sufficient right-of-way for a FOURTH track to be built through
South Orange. NJ Transit probably now owns that additional right-of-way.

I rode the M&E to New york on Tuesday and I thought of some questions on
the triple track from Newark to Milburn.

1. Without locating a copy of Taber, when was the triple track installed.

2. Was there any recent thought of extending the triple track to
Summit, especially when the electrification was redone?

3. Could not the line run almost as efficiently with 2 tracks? Ws any
thought given to eliminating the third track when redoing the
electrification?
