From personal observation, I have seen just the opposite... the train blows air outward as it passes... even have video of me on the platform in Ridgewood (E-L content), my open coat and hair blowing as the train pulls in. Now, there is the hazard of airborne dust and flying debris. Also, standing too near a train, you also might get hit by a protruding object on the car. So, while it probably isn't safe to stand too close to a moving train, it's not because of suction. - -----Original Message----- From: erielack-owner_@_lists.elhts.org [mailto:erielack-owner@lists.elhts.org] On Behalf Of Tupaczewski, Paul R (Paul) Sent: Friday, November 03, 2006 4:32 PM To: Erie Lackawanna Mail List Subject: (erielack) Railroad myth... Hi folks, I was watching a favorite show of mine, "Mythbusters" on the Discovery Channel, and noted with surprise a topic that will be featured on their next show: "Railroad Suction." It appears they will be testing the myth that if you stand too close to a moving railroad train on a platform, you will get sucked in. They do show a clip where they use a baby stroller with a dummy as their "test subject" and it appears to get completely blown away by a passing train, so it looks like it's not a smart thing to do. :) The show will be on next Wednesday, Nov, 8 at 9 PM EST on the Discovery Channel. - Paul The Erie Lackawanna Mailing List Sponsored by the ELH&TS http://www.elhts.org The Erie Lackawanna Mailing List Sponsored by the ELH&TS http://www.elhts.org ------------------------------
