(erielack) Re: Scranton Union Station

I believe the Union Station would have been around the east end of Bridge 60.
Such as where the present Steamtown loading platform is now.

A sudy of the "gulch" spanned by Bridge 60 shows many of the obvious
problems. It would have had to be at least a two level station with tracks at the
bridge level and down to the D&H. Presumably the CNJ could access the D&H by
running on their rails from Minooka Jct. O&W would have had to cross the
Lackawanna River to gain access to D&H level. Of course if it were three levels and
spanned the Lackawann River then existing CNJ and O&W track could be used.

There was a track betwee the Erie's Scranton branch and the D&H near Poplar
St. Presumably the Erie could go through this and then use the D&H / DL&W
interchange on the DL&W Diamond Branch to reach the terminal. An awkward route to
say the least.

The Laurel Line had not been built yet.

Storage tracks, loco turning and servicing facilities would have been
provided in the already very congested surrounding area.

All in all a formidable engineering engineering project, to say nothing of
the cost. But still a very interesting conceptof what might have been!
