Re: (erielack) Remaining EL track in Ohio

In Wadsworth, the ABC serves a chemical company (right around the corner from me) on land that was once Silver Creek yard. They offload chemicals from covered hoppers, do mixing, and then load them into trucks. It looks a lot like a grain elevator, that may be what you saw.

In Barberton, the old Seiberling Tire plant is now used by Continental Carbon (Continex) and they also recieve covered hoppers. The branch into PPG was rebuilt, and part of Chemical Yard remains, now used for storage of cars for Continex.

During the Conrail days, in Wadsworth they also served Ohio Match off of a switchback type spur, they D&RGW recieved boxcars of lumber, and occassionally a building supply comany off of that spur received a car. Beyond the Match was trackage to Ohio Injector which was no longer used. On the old North Branch was National Metal Abrasives. They recieved gondolas of scrap metal. Bearfoot Soul was also on the North Branch. All are long gone. General Clay, a brickyard between Wadsworth and Rittman also recieved boxcars.I got several cabride in the good old GP8's during those days. Most often #5408, I didn't know at the time (nor did the veteran EL crew) that it was actually former EL GP7 1214...

Oh well, if you're looking for info on Akron and further west, you could say I'm full of it. LOL.

  Paul,

<< After 4/1/76, CR did not operate mainline service from Marion west to
Griffith. For a time, they operated turns out of Marion to Huntington to
continue some semblance of service before they exited off the EL altogether
before 1/1/77. I don't think the Marion shop stayed open very long beyond
'76 before it was sold (today operated by Union Tank Car). Eventually, most
of the line west of Marion was sold for scrap, except for small sections
that were served by other RR's (such as the section in Rochester, Ind. that
to my knowledge is still in service for about 1-2 miles west from the old
IHRC connection on the east side of Rochester).

CR continued to operate mainline traffic on the EL from Youngstown west to
Akron. The portion from Akron to Sterling was physically in, but was in
service only as far west as Rittman, as was operated by CR until they exited
out of Akron altogether sometime in the mid-'80's. Besides the EL yard, CR
inherited the ex-PRR South Akron Yard, all of which was eventually
abandoned/sold off/torn up. Today, the old yard is being developed as an
industrial park. Trackage from Akron into Barberton was eventually torn
out, with a connection made off of CSX's parallel ex-B&O main just east of
Barberton, which allows the Akron Barberton Cluster (part of the Wheeling &
Lake Erie) access onto the remaining EL trackage from Barberton through
Wadsworth down to Rittman, where Morton Salt and a corrugated cardboard
facility are located. I seem to recall a grain elevator near Silver Creek
in CR days, and there might also be a consignee or two remaining in
Wadsworth.

Track is still physically in from Kent into Tallmadge (although some
crossings are paved over and nature's trees are taking over in alot of
places). As the thread below indicates, the Wheeling (which operates the
track from Kent to Ravenna) recently made a rare run to Tallmadge to spot a
passenger car for a new restaurant being located there (I don't know any
more details than that).

EL track west of Rittman through Sterling, Creston, and Burbank is gone.
The tower at Sterling was an EL facility, and was manned by CR for a few
years before abandonment of EL track. The tower stayed open under CSX for a
short time before being closed up entirely, and demolished sometime in the
mid- to late-1980's.

The Ashland Railway operates track from West Salem through Ashland down to
Mansfield where their base of operations is today, interchanging w/NS at
Mansfield (they also operate the ex-B&O trackage in/around Mansfield, as
well as operate ex-B&O trackage up to Williard to interchange w/CSX there).

NS operates EL trackage from where the the ex-PRR main crossed the EL up to
Harding Yard in Ontario(about 5 miles) to service the GM stamping plant
there.

EL track is gone from Ontario to Galion. From Galion to Marion, this was
shared trackage w/NYC/PC, and remains today as part of CSX's busy
Indianapolis Line.
