Re: Re:RE: (erielack) Newburg Branch

The Newburgh branch was opened in Jan. 1850 from Greycourt to Newburgh. The
"Short Cut", actually the Newburgh & NY RR, was opened between Vails Gate
Jct. and Newburgh Jct. (NJ) on the Main line in Aug. 1869. The Graham Line
which was opened in 1908-09 left the Short Cut at Highland Mills, passed
over it at the Woodbury Viaduct (actually double level bridges with the
Short Cut underneath but sharing one abutment with the Graham line.)
Passenger service on both branches ended in April 1936. The Short Cut was
abandoned from Highland Mills to West Cornwall (aka Enderlin and Idlewild)
in 1937. Service to a coal dealer, who still occuies the West Cornwall
station, continued to about 1954. The Newburgh branch was abandoned from
Greycourt to Vails Gate at the end of 1977. The Newburgh "night haul" often
went beyond Greycourt to Goshen and up to Maybrook to hand off hot cars
there.
In its heyday from 1881 to about 1903 the car ferry William Hart moved cars
across the Hudson forming an important through route. Some passenger trains
from New England to the west and south were even ferried across this way.
