RE: (erielack) Newburg Branch

Yes, I enjoy perusing maps also. The Erie and O&W are less than 1/2 mile apart just west of the viaduct. They were actually fairly closely parallel RR's all the way from Secaucas to Middletown. This map also illustrates that the West Shore south of Cornwall was originally constructed by the O&W or one of it's predecessors, and the valley of Moodna Creek was chosen to punch the line west. Later, the West Shore was constructed veering north from the O&W at Cornwall (I probably would never have known that if I wasn't on this list).

During EL years, the Newburgh branch connected with the Graham line via Goshen and the Main line. The eastern 6 miles of the Graham line was actually the original Newburgh branch and diverged just north of Highland Mills. Does anyone know when the portion from there to Vail's Gate Jct was abandoned? Operationally IIRC the Newburgh local would come down the branch, work the L&HR interchange at Goshen, head east and work Newburgh Jct if necessary and then retrace it's steps back to Newburgh.

Nope.

Where they cross is where Moodna Viaduct is. Substantial vertical difference.

These old maps are interesting. I never realized how close the O&W line was to the ERIE here.
